Donor Advisory Services

While giving may appear simple, giving effectively is not; as a donor’s giving increases, so does the time and effort required to manage the distribution of charitable funds - and to ensure that the money is given wisely and strategically. LIN Center aims to help donors find thoughtful and effective ways to give. For this reason, LIN plans to launch donor advisory services in late 2010. In the meantime, we are offering limited services, on a pro-bono basis.

LIN Center currently offers the following services to Donors:

  • Introductions to not-for-profit organizations and facilitation of site visits.
  • Design philanthropic initiatives that reflect the values of the company and/or incorporate strategic opportunities,
  • Support in implementation of philanthropic grantmaking programs, including the development of guidelines and requests for proposals; screening and conducting due diligence on potential grantees; drafting of sponsorship agreements and communications; tracking and monitoring grants and receiving reports on progress.
  • Designing and facilitating donor briefings on issue-specific topics (i.e., community development, education, health, ageing, migration).

The Rationale for Donor Advisory Services

To give money is an easy matter in any man’s power. But to decide to whom to give it, and how large and when, and for what purpose and how, is neither in every man’s power nor an easy matter. Hence, it is that such excellence is rare, praiseworthy, and noble. - Aristotle (384 - 322 BC)

Charitable giving can range from donating time or money to solve immediate local problems to directing large sums of money to tackle issues on a broader scale.

Whether broad or local, philanthropy cannot be handled on an ad hoc basis. Some donors might decide to seek the assistance and guidance of an individual or organization with experience in philanthropy-related issues. This can be prompted by a number of different scenarios:

  • The donor is unfamiliar with either local issues or active organizations;
  • The donor wishes to learn more about the range and types of groups working to address a specific problem; and/or
  • A donor does not have the time or human resources to develop and oversee a philanthropic initiative.

The LIN Center for Community Development can be your partner in philanthropy. Our team is available to help you shape your giving strategy, learn more about issues facing the area, or simply become more familiar with effective local not-for-profit organizations.

LIN also organizes opportunities for donors to meet and share best practices in philanthropy, examine trends, review ways in which area nonprofit organizations are addressing regional issues, and explore giving opportunities. Stay tuned for more information about our HCMC Grantmakers Forum…
