Vo Pham Minh Hieu was one of the volunteers who joined the “LIN Corporate Volunteer Challenge” in 2011 to commit 12 hours to support the 5am organization (a non-profit organization which creates playgrounds for disadvantaged children) and he completed this challenge within one month.
Hieu shared with LIN Center about his experience in supporting his community through contributing his professional skills to the 5am organization.
Can you explain to us about your professional skills which you have used to support the 5am organization?
I was asked to help 5am organization in the areas of IT and design. I designed the current logo of Football 4 Children’s future program (an activity by 5am organization) and I am also re-developing 5am’s website.
During your volunteer work, what difficulties did you face?
The hardest part was the idea. Because both design and web development need a good idea to get off the ground. Huong (the representative of the 5am organization) requested that the website did not need to be fussy or resplendent, they only needed it to be simple, creative and unique.
How did you overcome that challenge?
I spent more time figuring out the idea, then I did the research and learned more about football (main activity of 5am) to have sufficient material to support my creative thinking.
You have participated in “LIN Corporate Volunteer Challenge” and have completed 12 hours of the challenge. Is there any reason or motive for you to join this challenge?
Through Huong’s introduction, I had heard about LIN Center’s “LIN Corporate Volunteer Challenge” which had the purpose of fund-raising money for charitable organizations. Through this program, a company can sponsor an organization by paying a certain amount for each volunteer hour. LIN Center would then use this money to support the various organizations. I found it very meaningful, and the application procedure was simple, hence I joined.
Which aspect of being a skill volunteer do you like?
I really love supporting my community by doing my favorite job. My major is IT but I’m very interested in design/creative work. Therefore, joining 5am helped me satisfy my own passion.
